“Nothing to be done” is the first spoken line in WAITING FOR GODOT. This is meant in two ways: there is nothing to do, and any action could be futile.
While the two homeless men Vladimir and Estragon wait for someone who might help and redeem them, they pass the time. They have been waiting for a long time. They play games to endure the agony of waiting and not being able to leave.
They are stuck in their lives.
How do we behave in a reality that we increasingly no longer understand? Can we escape? What if no one redeems us?
WAITING FOR GODOT is a hilarious tragicomedy about human existence. In Barbara Wachendorff’s production at the Ladenburg pier, overlooking the Neckar River, the playful side is emphasized. But between slapstick and confusion, crazy dialogues and clown acts, despair always peeks through. The question arises: Can waiting be a statement? Is refusal a political strategy?
